Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Paraliminals

Many of our clients, including the US Military, have used the Paraliminals to help servicemen and women returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. All of the Paraliminals aid in the transition and can be beneficial in helping those with post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD). The following are perhaps the easiest to use:  Deep Relaxation, Focus & Concentration, Fresh Start, Happy for No Reason, Memory Supercharger, Perfect Health Personal Genius, Self-Esteem Supercharger, Simplicity, You Deserve It!, Youthful Vitality, and 10-Minute Supercharger. (You can find all of the Paraliminals listed on this page.) Those can be very effective, because the Service Member can participate with little effort other than pressing play. For those who enjoy the sessions and would like to engage further, Paul Scheele recommends Anxiety-Free to keep anxieties within a healthy range, New History Generator to help deal emotions coming from past experiences, and New Option Generator to help provide additional ways for the nonconscious mind to respond to various stimuli. If the Service Member is not familiar with the Paraliminals, this information is useful:
  1. Each Paraliminal CD comes with a manual inside it that gives a bit more information if the SM should like to read more.
  2. The SM should be ready to relax and listen for about 30 minutes.
  3. Stereo headphones are recommended to listen to the CD.
  4. Before the SM listens, he or she should focus on the benefits he or she desires. Some CDs will ask some questions to help clarify the purpose—if need be, the SM can pause the CD to think about and state his or her purpose and desired benefits. This can be a therapeutic moment—discuss the desired benefits and purpose with the SM and include this in documentation.
  5. Let the SM know that he or she will hear 2 voices. He or she may choose which one to pay attention to or float in between the 2 voices.  The nonconscious mind receives the whole message. Tell the SM: "On a very deep level you will be learning strategies to help you respond differently to the world so that you get the results you want." The changes are subtle – at the very least, the SM will relax; the CDs help people tap into strengths that are already inside them.
  6. Most changes are integrated with 3 days of listening. We suggest that SMs listen for 5 consecutive days. We also recommend that SMs continue to listen to the CD at least once a week thereafter.
  7. If he or she is not getting the results he or she wants, he or she should 1) consider changing the time of day he/she listens, 2) change the position in which he/she listens, 3) change the environment. From a therapeutic standpoint, it might be good to revisit the purpose and explore what other interventions might help to strengthen the benefits of listening.
  8. If the SM wishes to listen to more than one Paraliminal session, he/she should wait at least 20 minutes between playing each CD.
Some other notes:
  1. Before the SM begins to listen to the Paraliminal, find out the degree of discomfort: "On a scale of 0-10, where 0 = no discomfort and 10 = the worst discomfort imaginable, how would you rate the (stress, pain, depression, anger, etc.)?" Repeat the question after the SM finishes listening, and note any comments that he/she makes. Please include this information in your documentation so we can use it for program evaluation purposes.
  2. Periodically, it would be good to check to see how many times per week the SM is listening to Paraliminals, which ones, and why. Again, as we look at the program, this could provide useful information about what to recommend.
